Get Scouted Scouting CareersIt is 1,770 miles from Fort Worth, Texas, to Providence, Rhode Island. That’s the distance between the TCU campus and The BIG EAST headquarters, but apparently distance really does make the heart grow fonder. TCU’s announcement this week that the school’s athletic programs would leave the Mountain West Conference and join the BIG EAST has been widely met with applause and back patting all around. But, we wonder how this move could genuinely be in the best interest of the TCU, and now other BIG EAST, student-athletes who will have to endure traveling halfway across the country to participate in a single game, match or meet and then turn around and go back home nearly two thousand miles away? Look, we know it’s really all about TV and BCS bowl money. We’re not naive. But, in the deliberation by TCU’s Board of Trustees didn’t somebody stand up and ask, “What will this mean to our kids?” The press releases, of course, threw bright sunshine on the notion saying the athletes would receive much more exposure, but we’re just saying if the presidents of NCAA DI schools give as a main reason for not having a football playoff system that the added game or two would put too much strain on the student-athletes, then what do they think the impact of constant cross country travel will have on the 5,000 or so BIG EAST student-athletes? Just curious.
