The University of C0nnecticut’s women’s basketball team surpassing UCLA’s men’s NCAA Division I record of 88 consecutive basketball wins deserves the respect of every sports fan. It is a remarkable accomplishment which by any standard establishes a benchmark which no other DI basketball dynasty has been able to approach except of course the vaunted Bruins led by All-America center Bill Walton and his celebrated coach, John Wooden. Other great college teams since the UCLAn’s set the record have come and gone such as Duke’s men’s teams in 1991 and 1992 or any number of Tennessee’s Lady Vols under legendary head coach Pat Summit. Both had opportunities to take a shot at immortality, but even Coach K and Summit’s best of the best could not muster up this type of incredible run. Think about it – three different UConn teams have contributed to the current streak. The level of consistency, excellence and dominance which Geno Auriemma, his staff and teams have laid out before us is unsurpassed by any basketball program, men or women, in the history of Division I competition. The Huskies’ last loss came against Stanford in the NCAA tournament national semifinals in 2008. They may not lose again this year. Regardless, when their winning streak comes to an end, as it eventually must, it should be roundly recognized for what it truly is – absolutely amazing.
