Water During the Game, Sport Drink Aferward

Keep water or sports drinks close by in the hot summer air.

Listening to JOX FM 94.5 in Birmingham today, they had a doctor as their afternoon guest.  He was talking about staying hydrated during all the heat we have now and can expect the next several months.   I thought about changing the channel, but instead decided to listen in for a few minutes on the way to lunch.  Glad that I did.  Good stuff.

We’ve heard a lot about this topic, sure, but the JOX DOC, as they call him, put things into a new light for me which I wanted to share with you.  First, he says that an athlete should stay hydrated all day before a game, match or meet, that is, drink water steadily throughout the day.  Then, you should drink at least eight ounces of water about a half hour before any outdoor activity this summer.  And, which I found interesting, he says that it is better to drink water during the game and to then drink some sort of sports drink which will replace your electrolites.

Dehydration is no fun and it can lead to a far worse situation and condition, heat stroke, which can kill you if not attended go promptly and properly.  Heed this advice and stay safe out there.
