Get Scouted Scouting CareersThe NCAA and NAIA have initial eligibility centers in place, albeit the NAIA came to the party very late. That aside, both organizations’ offices are meant to accomplish two primary objectives:
- To verify high school and junior college student-athletes’ core course grades and standardized test scores.
- To expedite the process for freshman and JUCO eligibility.
- To eliminate cheating in academic reporting to the organizations.
Every high school freshman and junior college student-athlete planning to participate in NCAA and NAIA athletics must meet or exceed the minimum academic requirements set by their respective organizations prior to being ruled eligible to play at their chosen colleges. While the NCAA standards are slightly more rigid than those of the NAIA, each was established to require incoming student-athletes to be prepared for the more strenuous academic settings and demands of college life. Further, each organization has assumed a mandate to graduate their athlete students without exception if at all possible. By setting academic guidelines for athletic eligibilty, the NCAA and NAIA are sending the clear message that athletes are expected to be students first and not to be run in and out of athletic departments without regard to their academic responsibilities to the institutions which they attend.
Gone are the days when manufactured or altered transcripts could be submitted directly to colleges for blind-eye examination and verification. And gone, too, are the days when an NCAA or NAIA coach was permitted to push an athlete through the school’s admissions office for the sake of landing a top recruit whose academic history would otherwise fail to meet any reasonable scrutiny of academic baseline performance.
Through these departments, the NCAA and NAIA have done high school and junior college athletes across the country a major plus by setting these expectations. These academic boundaries are encouraging more athletes to give due attention to their grades which in turn produces a higher quality college student and athlete. We applaud their efforts.
