The prep prospects that excel in college are those who create an uncompromising environment of success while still in high school.  They establish a pattern which carries them through the dog days of being a college freshman and into a solid college career.  Every day these special student-athletes declare war on mediocrity which does its best to worm its way into their thinking.  The best of the best simply will not allow mediocrity to win.

Whether the battle comes in the form of dragging yourself out of bed for early morning workouts, doing extra homework reading to the dim lights on the team bus, or spending extra time honing your skills when everyone else has gone home, every student-athlete has tough choices to reach their goal of playing college sports.  There are no shortcuts.  And those who choose the easy way eventually see their fortunes take a nose dive into the world of the mediocre. 

Mental diligence is the key element which differentiates winners from losers.  Having the will to do what others cannot or will not do is the underpinning of those who develop in high school into the most desired prospects for college coaches.  It can be seen in an athlete’s eyes, practice habits, academic test scores, character and in the friends they choose to surround themselves with.  It is something inside which can catapult the average athlete past the so-called stars whose lack of work ethic eventually erode their natural talent.  It’s what makes responsible men and women out of boys and girls. 

Every day offers these challenges.  Moment by moment, young student-athletes encounter the pull of mediocrity.  Digging deeply to discover your true potential by making decisions which will put yourself in the position to earn a scholarship offer is the penultimate war.  How badly do you really want to earn success?  How far will you step toward the edge of your limits to achieve your goals?  It’s all there, waiting for you to grasp, if you can find it within yourself to continually fight off the temptation to be average, to be mediocre.
