We mourn our dear friend and valued colleague Tommy Barnhill

The news which we had dreaded came yesterday as the NSR staff was wrapping up the day. Our dear friend and college coach liaison, Tommy Barnhill, had just passed away following a four-month-long and courageous battle with cancer. Tommy was a legend in the Alabama softball fastpitch community. He taught pitching lessons for 35 years and coached countless girls how to play the game of softball the right way. The list of his protégés is far too long to recount here. To chronicle his teams’ championship trophies would be impressive, to be sure, but meaningless according to him unless every player’s name and contributions could be included. He was indeed all about the kids. Moreover, the number of lives which he touched with his gentle approach and giant heart is immeasurable. As a co-worker, we will miss his baritone voice and easy way, his infectious laugh and thoughtful approach to everything he did. The superlatives about him are seemingly unending and the outpouring of sorry and grief over his passing has been incredible. It is difficult to properly appreciate him because his contributions run far deeper than a litany of high profile acquaintances and accomplishments. What Tommy brought to the table of life and to all those fortunate enough to be around him was a sense of peace, joy and pure happiness. And perhaps when all is said and done, the best way to honor Tommy Barnhill is to simply say that if you knew him, you loved him.
