College recruiting is a science with rules that are constantly changing. All sorts of different things come into play which are unknown to casual observers. But, there’s just enough info spread around online and in newspapers that make a lot of people think that they are experts, or at least believe they have enough knowledge to give high school prospects good advice. And that, in a nutshell, is the problem most prospects and their parents face as they ask, “Who can I believe?”
Just because your neighbor subscribes to Popular Mechanics does not make him a reliable source for repairing your car when it grinds to a halt. And, just because your coach knows the sport you play does not mean that he or she is up to speed on how the recruiting process works, the latest rules and, more importantly, how you can most effectively get noticed, evaluated and recruited. The same coaches that recruited them will probably not be recruiting you. The same schools they were interested in will probably not be the schools you will be interested in attending.
