Handling success is an important measuring stick

When NSR scout Robert Cagle interviewed Alabama commitment-to-be O.J. Howard, Cagle wanted to know how O.J. was coping with success before enrolling him.

Success is not uncommon for college prospects. Whether it comes from team or individual accomplishments, becoming a winner is within the very nature of wanting to advance from high school to the next level. But, how you handle success matters. It matters a lot. And knowing this, the question begs to be answered, How do you run with a full cup of success?

Some will run recklessly, not aware that their actions and attitude are being scrutinized by college coaches watching on the sidelines. Recklessness can create problems. If you are not appreciative of your teammates and their contributions to your success, for instance, coaches will glean that you care more about the attention you attracted than what the team has earned. College coaches want athletes that are confident, to be sure, but they want them to have a healthy perspective of the team concept and how those around a star athlete are affected by and spotlight seeking individual.

Given a choice, and most coaches do indeed have choices in recruiting, they will sign the more mature prospect who has a genuine appreciation for others and their contributions. The ideal prospect is a team-first athlete who wants to share the bright light with their peers. Coaches see them as coachable and they see them as people who will be able to more realistically accept a subordinate role their first or second year in college before perhaps getting their opportunity to be a team leader and a legitimate college star.

In truth, those are the same characteristics in athletes that NSR scouts around the globe look for in the prospects we evaluate. They stand out and we enroll them because we know from 33 years of experience what college coaches want to see in their most desirable recruits. That’s the main reason that NSR scouts conduct personal, in-home interviews with our prospects. We want to discuss the important things related to them as people outside of athletics. We want to tap into their thoughts and dreams, their character and their goals. In doing this, NSR scouts are able to offer college coaches a unique view or prospects which the coaches cannot get from a telemarketing company or a freebie Web site.

At NSR, we work harder.
