College coaches are people, too. They want to surround themselves with athletes they like, not just athletically, but personally as well. In their search for recruits that fit their programs, they do all they can to delve into the essence of the individual athletes. Are they compatible? Do they see themselves working one-on-one with the athlete? Does the athlete respond positively to them? These are all essential questions which every coach attempts to answer during the recruiting process.
High school athletes can improve their chances of getting offers from coaches by paying close attention how they communicate and behave with coaches on phone calls, in emails and texts and during unofficial and official visits. Coaches are constantly observing a prospect’s actions and reactions, absorbing the depth of thought prospects bring during convdersations, and evaluating if prospects fit in with their current team members. To that, prospects have to be aware that the coaches do have choices and the interactions they have with recruits each has a bearing on whether or not prospects eventually win the recruiting lottery with an offer to join a program.
How a prospect presents himself, or herself, to a staff in every interplay has an impact on the coaches’ final decisions. Being too casual, too bold, too hauty or too insecure can drop a recruit on a staff’s rating scale. So, prospects must take care to plan how they will present themselves at games and practices, through written messages, on phone calls and in person meetings. Each opportunity which presents itself to a recruit is crucial. Proper attire, manners, respect and behavior is under scrutiny and should not be taken lightly.
