To twist a phrase, there is no waiting in recruiting

NSR prospects like Lakelyn Fontenot are evaluated by college coaches before attending her tournaments.

Representing a college in athletics is an honor.  Only about one in twenty-five high school athletes get to experience this unique opportunity.  The competition for roster spots is fierce and for the prep athletes that envision themselves in that role getting involved in the recruiting process is the first of many steps which can potentially lead to realizing this dream.

College coaches are constantly searching for prospects.  Regardless of a prospect’s age, coaches are dialed into the field of candidates available to them.  The key phrase here is “candidates available to them.”  If a coach does not know about a prospect, it is impossible to evaluate and recruit that prospect.  So, it is on the athletes to get their comprehensive profiles and video into the hands of coaches.  Without accomplishing this integral step, athletes get left behind or left out altogether.

Merely being on a club or travel team does not guarantee that an athlete will be noticed.  Neither does being named to post season teams.  Those are resume builders, but they are not conduits to college coach desks.  And, parents of athletes that believe that these are enough to get the ball rolling are headed down the wrong path.

This the Digital Recruiting Age.  College coaches no longer go to games, tournaments or other events to discover talent.  They go to these contests knowing which athletes they want to see and evaluate.  The occasional discovery does happen, but in a large majority of cases, coaches have already ID’d a prospect and attend events to verify a pros[ect’s abilities.  As an athlete, if you are not on coaches’ lists, chances are you will be overlooked and fall to far behind to catch up in time to get choices of programs to join.
