It’s hard enough to be an NCAA Division I athlete.  The year-round practice time, extensive travel and intense pressure to succeed is felt by everyone.

Yet, National Scouting Report prospect Sami Billeaudeau not only signed to play softball  at  D-I Louisiana-Monroe, but also plans to major in pre-medicine.

That’s quite a challenge.

However, Billeaudeau,  a left-handed outfielder from Sulfur, La., set her sights on lofty goals a long time ago.

“I started playing softball around the age of 4,” she said. “I like to believe I had natural talent for it.  When it came to softball, I feel like I just understood and could react without thinking about it.  I first started playing tournament ball around the age of 8, and oh how I fell in love!  The level of competitiveness just brought out another side of me.  At the age of 12 is when I really figured out that I wanted to play softball at the highest level possible.”

Robby Wilson, NSR’s National Softball Director,  couldn’t say enough about the Sulfur High School standout.

“Sami is one of those special young ladies that, although humble, is by far the most confident leader on the field,” said Wilson, who scouted her in Louisiana.  “She has a will to win that simply can’t be taught.  She will do whatever is asked of her to get the ‘W’ for her team and coaches.”

Billeaudeau’s junior batting average was .457 — .115 points higher than her sophomore year.

“She has great balance at the plate with rare patience,” Wilson explained.  “She naturally uses her power through her swing, can take it to either field, has very quick hands and has great bat speed.”

Predicting great things for Billeaudeau, Wilson told college coaches in his scouting report two years ago: “Sami will not only be your hardest worker and make an immediate impact athletically on your program, but academically she will go above and beyond as she currently does, maintaining her 4.0. Sami is a natural leader and a role model to her peers.”

ULM softball coach Corey Lyon echoed Wilson’s opinion when talking about Billeaudeau following the NCAA’s early signing period.

“Sami Billeaudeau gives us a dynamic athlete that can run and hit and is a great defensive player,”  Lyon said proudly.

Billeaudeau has no fear about tackling pre-med — with hopes of specializing in anesthesiology — along with the demands of a Division I softball program.

“I have maintained a 4.0 GPA since the 8th grade,” she said. “Academics are definitely my first priority.  I treat it just like the game of softball, and give it 110 percent.”
