Get Scouted Scouting CareersA big guard in women’s basketball who is not afraid to mix it up inside and has good shooting range and ball skills is a valuable commodity for college coaches.
Alexis Theus , a 5-foot-9 guard/forward from Lampasas High School in Kempner, Texas, has the strength and size to take it to the hole and the finesse to hit a mid-range jumper and 3-pointer.
A 2017 National Scouting Report prospect, Theus amassed some impressive stats this season at Lampasas. She averaged almost 14 points and five rebounds per game and shot 31 percent from 3-point range and 79 percent from the line.
NSR scout Sean Tolliver was very impressed when he watched her play.
“Alexis is a versatile wing that can effectively play the two or the three,” Tolliver wrote in his NSR scouting report. “She possesses three-point range and an excellent midrange game where she can put the ball on the floor and pull up or finish at the basket. Alexis has the ability to start the break with an outlet pass, run the wing and finish the play, or lead the break herself. With her strength and length, she is more than willing to rebound and bang with bigger opponents if necessary. Her 2014 AAU team used her as a ‘1’ and her high school team has occasionally played her at the ‘1’, depending on the matchups, further displaying her versatility.
“Alexis has good footwork, displaying various spins, drop steps, and up-and-under moves in order to get her shot off or find open teammates on a steady basis. She also knows how to move without the ball, setting screens and then stepping out for the pick and pop or rolling hard on the pick and roll. Alexis has the skills to play at the collegiate level and is only going to get better.”
Theus is also a sprinter on the track team. She competes in the 100-meter dash and is a member of the 4×100 team. She captured state medals in both events last spring.
However, she plans to focus on academics and basketball in college. A 3.9 student, she hopes to pursue a career in sports medicine or social work.
“I’ve been playing competitive basketball for seven years,” Theus wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “Competitive sports have provided me the opportunities to learn and grow in life as well as in the game of basketball by enhancing my leadership skills on and off the court.
“Three traits that I have gained since playing basketball are strength of mind, good sportsmanship, and confidence. Basketball involves hard work and commitment. I am ready for the challenges at the next level.”
