Get Scouted Scouting CareersThe Kent State University softball program will feature a genuine National Scouting Report sister act in the fall of 2017.
Brenna Brownfield, a junior at Lakewood (Ohio) High School, will join her big sister, Bailey, a 2015 NSR prospect, on the KSU campus. The younger Brownfield recently committed to play for head coach Eric Oakley, whose NCAA Division I team competes in the Mid-America Conference.
Brenna who helped her high school team to a Division II runner-up state finish last season, is a versatile athlete who plays multiple positions, including pitcher.
In addition, Brenna batted .530 with 55 runs batted in, 15 doubles, four triples, six homers, 42 runs and an eye-popping .887 slugging percentage in her sophomore year.
“I usually hit in the 3 or 4 spot and I’m known as a power hitter for my team, but I love sneaking in an unexpected bunt when asked,” Brenna wrote in her NSR message to college coaches. “I’m a confident, competitive, aggressive, dedicated softball player and I love to have fun. I’m a team player and love to make my team smile.”
Brenna has earned several awards during her high school career. Last year she received honorable mention All-State, first-team All-District, first-team All-League, first-team All-Newark Advocate and Best Offensive Player. A committed student as well, Brenna has produced a 3.6 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has earned a spot on Lakewood’s honor roll every semester since entering high school.
Sheila Thiery, NSR area director in Southwest Ohio, enrolled both Brownfield sisters. In her NSR scouting report on Brenna, Thiery noted the younger Brownfield is a solid, all-around player who can top 60 MPH when pitching and can seamlessly slide into any position in the field when not hurling. That flexibility, along with her exceptional offensive abilities, will make it hard for Coach Oakley to keep Brenna on the bench very long when she hits the Kent State campus.
