Get Scouted Scouting CareersSavanna Holmes has accomplished something few athletes ever do — three state championships.
The rising junior pitcher from Hale County High School in Moundville, Ala., recently led her softball team to its third consecutive state crown. Remarkably, the 2018 National Scouting Report prospect still has two years remaining in the circle before beginning her college career at the University of Auburn at Montgomery.
Holmes boasted a 24-6 record, including 10 shutouts and two no-hitters. She surrendered only 24 earned runs in 178 innings for a 0.97 ERA. At the plate, she hit .380 with 13 doubles.
To top off her season, Holmes was named first-team All-State for the third consecutive year. As a pre-freshman hurler, Holmes tossed two gems — a one- and a two-hitter — in the state finals, earning the prestigious state tournament MVP award. This past season she duplicated that honor.
“She is a grizzled veteran,” Hale County coach Lori Wyatt said. “She has been named All-Tournament all three years. She’s come through for us in the circle and at the plate.”
In earning four victories during the 2016 tournament, Holmes tossed a no-hitter, pitched 26 innings, struck out 22, walked nine, scattered 15 hits and allowed only three earned runs. At the plate, she drove in eight runs, including a grand slam in Hale County’s first game.
“Dreams don’t achieve themselves,” Holmes wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “It takes hard work, determination, and confidence. You will always see me giving 110% no matter what. Whether I am in the classroom or the softball field, I give everything I’ve got.”
Holmes will be joining a AUM team that formally enters NCAA Division II this year after a number of seasons in the NAIA. The Warhawks will be members of the Gulf South Conference. This past season, head coach Eric Newell guided the team to an impressive 53-8 record and a fourth-place finish in the NAIA Softball World Series.
NSR area scout Lee Crane, who discovered Holmes, said the 5-foot-6 pitcher should have little trouble making the transition from high school to college. Her fastball has been clocked between 62-64 mph fastball and her change-up in the mid-40s.
“Savanna is one of the most self-motivated and disciplined athletes that I have ever had the privilege to work with,” Crane wrote in his NSR scouting report. “She knows how to play the game the right way and has always played and competed at the highest level.
“She is solid at all phases of the game. At the plate she has great hand-eye coordination and mechanics. She will hit with power and move base runners, but she is disciplined enough to maintain a great average and on-base percentage.”
