Senior Goal Keeper Stars on Field and in Classroom
Four years ago, Amanda Smith and her family heard from a neighbor in Avon, Conn. about Dan Hammond. As the Area Director for NSR in Connecticut, Dan had interviewed Amanda’s next door friend a month earlier. Already having been accepted on her academic record at Boston College, Penn, Delaware, Holy Cross and Colgate, Amanda wanted more, but it was late in her senior year. Very late.
A prep All-State performer in field hockey, her goal was to earn a nursing degree and play her sport at the highest level. But, there was a hitch. Her high school coach told Amanda that it would be impossible for her to take on the academic grind in her major while simultaneoulsy meeting the demands of Division I sports. Oh, and did we mention that it was very late for a senior to dive into the recruiting process?
Undaunted by her coach’s advice, Amanda and her parents contacted Dan and set up an interview. After learning how NSR could expose her to every field hockey program in America which offered nursing, the Smith’s signed on. Within days, Dan had spoken about Amanda to practically every Division I program in the Northeast with nursing majors.
Fast forward and Amanda would sign with Boston Unversity and the “impossible” challenge was laid out before her. Today, four years later, Amanda not only has become one of the top goal keepers in the America East Conference, but she has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in BU’s traditionally tough academic environment.
In a recent note from Dan Hammonds, he wrote, “I received a letter last week from the Smith’s. [Amanda] is the senior starting goal keeper for the BU terriers and has been for two years. She will graduate this year with a pre-nursing degree and will stay on to finish at BU while being the grad assisitant and earning her nursing degree.”
NSR salutes Amanda Smith who had the courage to not only pursue her life’s goals, but to acheive them with determination and grace. Nice going, Amanda. All of us at NSR are very proud of you and your accomplishments.
