Freedom to play sports is a precious part and privilege of America’s youth

In many coujntries, athetes like NSR prospect Taylor Russell would never be permitted to compete in athletics.

On Election Day it’s fitting to remind high school athletes across America how lucky they are to live in a country that offers so many advantages to them in their athletic endeavors.  We could go on ad nausea about all the freedoms we enjoy, but this is a day which allows us as citizens to revel in the single act of voting for our elected officials which is a unique right among the human race.  The people we put into offices are our representatives who go on to provide us with laws which permit our freedoms to manifest themselves in our daily lives, not the least of which is playing sports throughout our lives.  Granted, sometimes they restrict our freedoms to some extent, too, but in the end, and as they pertain to our youth and athletics, what we have is special and invaluable, to say the least.

Many countries fail to recognize the value of all their young people having the chance to chase their dreams of advancing from one level to another in athletics.  Other countries either curtail athletic participation or discourage open athletic competition.  They put up barriers to their youth, stunt their will to excel and stridently keep them from reaching their God-given potential on the fields, diamonds and courts.  But in America our leaders recognize that one of the most essential freedoms we can ardently practice is to teach our young people to work together in teams, to exceed their own personal expectations and to experience and learn the ups and downs of life through sports.

If you are a high school athlete, do not take playing sports for granted.  It is a privilege, not a Constitutional right.  Were you to live in another country, you could easily be relegated to follow the oppressive rule of a government which would have no interest in you as a person, your growth as a contributor to society, or your desire to be whatever you might choose to be through hard work and results in sports.  Be grateful.  Be very grateful.
