Athletes love their uniforms. Donning a uniform for the first time is one of life’s most exciting moments. Present and past athletes may never forget the thrill of receiving that first jersey with a number on the back and team name on the front.

Uniforms make athletes feel special, unique and apart from everyone else. But having the opportunity to wear a uniform should not be lost in the privilege, as well as responsibility, it presents to athletes from Tee-ball to the pros.

National Scouting Report scouts have a broader view of what it means to wear a uniform. Although uniforms have, in some instances, become marketing and public-relations tools, they also represent something much greater.

Uniforms signify unity and the willingness of an athlete to compete with teammates for a common cause. Moreover, that same uniform signals to others that being a part of that specific team is the athlete’s personal choice, which he or she is proud to have made.

However, NSR scouts sometimes witness athletes who do not grasp the significance of representing their team, sponsor, school or organization. These athletes apparently have not been told or convinced that wearing the uniform is a deeply rooted privilege, and dishonoring that privilege may be a flaw in their character which is hard to reverse or undo.

Keeping that in mind, here are some things athletes should and should not do in uniform:

  • Understand that when wearing a uniform, you represent not just your current team, but everyone before you who has worn it with pride and distinction.
  • Pledge to honor the uniform as you would a trusted and revered mentor, teacher, relative or coach.
  • Never do anything in uniform that would embarrass your team, coaches, family, community or school.
  • While wearing the uniform, remember that you are honoring everyone on the team or associated with the team. They deserve that from you.
  • Take good care of the uniform when you’re not playing. It deserves your full respect.
  • Hold others responsible for honoring the uniform, too.
