Note from NCAA coach offers opportunity for clarity in scouting services

At NSR, we scout and enroll the very same prospects that college coaches recruit.

Occasionally we get a note from a college coach wanting to know about our NCAA certification and why NSR is so special as to make him or her want to use our service regularly.  See, there are so many scouting services that quality can sometimes be hard to see among all the ruckus surrounding it.  In this case, the coach complained that most scouting services send him info on unqualified high school athletes making it a real waste of his time to go through them trying to find one or two legit athletes.

Yesterday, when this NCAA DII coach asked us to verify our NCAA certification and to give him good reasons why he should begin a working relationship with us, it was easy to respond because what we offer college coaches is a unique opportunity to evaluate prospects that have been personally scouted and interviewed.  But, let the response speak to all that.  Here was the coach’s request and our answer:

NCAA Coach:  I would want to see proof that it is ok to use your service from the NCAA. There are a lot of scouting services out there. I am not interested in kids that can not make it through my program or are not interested in achieving the same things I am. I have not had great experiences with scouting services. They typically are just pushing kids to programs that should not be there. I usually have better luck finding them on my own. What makes your services different from the other hundred that I keep getting emails from. If you do not have caliber kids then please do not email me anymore. It is a waste of both our time.
NSR:  Coach, thank you for the email regarding our service.  You raise good questions which we are glad to address so that you will become comfortable using National Scouting Report as a viable source for quality prospects.
As you probably know, the NCAA requires certification in only three sports – men’s and women’s basketball and football.  On September 6, 2012, we received the following email from the NCAA:  “All three sports (MBB, WBB and FB) were all approved on August 10. NCAA institutions can access your scouting service by logging into a special link which only they can access.”  Your compliance officer should have that link for you.
NSR is different from other scouting services in four significant ways:
  1. Our scouts:  NSR scouts actually scout high school and club events.  We are NOT a telemarketing service, nor are we a free online service.  Our scouts live and work in their communities.  They scout and evaluate talent in their assigned geographical areas.  That is different in that nearly all other scouting services never see their client-athletes in person which means that the athletes they bring to you have not been formally scouted or properly interviewed.
  2. Our enrollment qualifications:  We are not an open enrollment service which means that we do not accept any and all prospects that want to enroll with us.  For a prospect to qualify, he or she must have demonstrated the ability to perform at some level of college athletics.  They must have the desire to play at the next level.  They must have good to excellent grades and standardized test scores.   They must be of good character.  And, they must have the full emotional and financial support of their families.
  3. Our standards: NSR has been scouting prospects since 1980.  We started the scouting service industry 33 years ago.  All of our standards are tied to and based upon NCAA rules.  We train our scouts on these rules, we demand their compliance and hold them accountable at all times.  To accomplish this, we send our scouts daily notes which provide continued education on the NCAA rules as well as other related recruiting issues.  Additionally, we have monthly regional conference calls with them as well as a monthly companywide, educational Webinar.
  4. Our advantage:  Because our service is free to all college coaches, we are allowed to assist coaches in learning more about the prospects they are interested in recruiting and going the extra mile by arranging upon request unofficial and official visits or serving as a conduit between coaches and prospects during quiet or dead periods.  However, we are not permitted to accompany a prospect to an NCAA campus, nor are we allowed to negotiate scholarships on behalf of the family.  Finally, we cannot provide you inside info on a prospect which we would not also make known to all coaches.
The average NSR prospect has over a 3.2 GPA.  He or she has been carefully vetted by an on-the-ground NSR scout who meets the prospects and interviews them along with their parents during in-home visits.  This process allows us to qualify them for our service and effectively screen them for you and other college coaches.
Our placement rate is over 90%.  Because we require that each NSR prospect pass these strict enrollment standards, we have a very high success rate.  We go after the same prospects that you would.  We do not enroll anyone that does not meet our standards which, in essence, are your standards, too.
I hope that this satisfactorily answers your questions and addresses your concerns.  We are a company which serves both our clients and college coaches.  And we do this with a great deal of pride and professionalism.  It is our sincere hope that you will see fit to work with us as we present you with high quality candidates for your program.
