Get Scouted Scouting CareersCollege coaches usually don’t flock to Farmville, Va.
The small, rural town is located 30 miles south of the Commonwealth’s geographic center, neatly tucked in between Lynchburg and Richmond. Some people might say, “You can’t get there from here.”
If you are a high school athlete seeking college exposure, a college coach might be quickly forgiven for getting lost driving to the Fuqua School. Although the school has a stellar academic reputation, sports are not always on the radar when speaking of Virginia private school powerhouses.
Yet, that is where 2017 National Scouting Report softball prospect Katie Haney makes her daily commute from her family’s home in Burkeville, about 20 minutes away.
A 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior shortstop, Haney is the living embodiment of what coaches really mean when they use the word student-athlete. Not only is she a three-sport standout, she also sports a 3.7 GPA. Besides being a two-time All-State selection in softball, Haney runs cross country and is captain of the basketball team.
Haney plays summer travel softball for the Vienna Stars 18U Gold based in Northern Virginia. In her spare time — what little of it there is — she does volunteer work at Crewe-Burkeville Youth Recreation Center to “take pride in teaching the young girls to love and respect the game as much as I do,” she said,
Haney’s primary position is shortstop, but she also can play third base and outfield. At the plate, she can hit for power, but her true strength is putting the ball in play. She led the state in hitting this year with a .659 batting average.
Jim Simpson, NSR area director of scouting in Virginia, can’t say enough about her.
“She’s a really good kid, a two-time All-State shortstop, and she already has offers from a number of Division I schools,” he said.
But that’s just for starters.
“Katie really is an incredible young talent and lady you’ll be proud to have,” Simpson wrote in his scouting report to college coaches. “… Katie is working really hard to hone in on that perfect D-I opportunity that will allow her to take her studies to the next level also. She’s being very careful to include her academic goals along with her athletic ones. She continues to build a resume that already includes stellar test scores, but Katie says she can do better. She loves the D-I option but remains open to a competitive program that works for the family, for Katie and provides that sweet-spot combination of both academics and athletics.”
Haney remains focused on both.
“Since the beginning of my high school career,” she said, “my goal has always been to attend a top academic college with one of the country’s best softball programs.”
