“Our coach is handling all that for us.” How many times have we heard that sad recruiting story? Too many to count. And then, when those same parents and kids look up as the senior year arrives and nothing has been done, it’s a pitiful thing to watch as reality sets in and panic strikes. “Is it too late?” “How can we get coaches’ attention?” “If we’d known this was going to happen, we would have signed on with you two years ago.”
If you are prospect whose coach has told you that he or she will handle your recruitment for you, beware. There’s only about a 10% chance that will actually occur. That’s one in ten chances that the coach will do what is really necessary to get your profile and video into coaches’ hands.
Scare tactics, you ask? Well, in this truth you should be scared. If a high school or club coach is your only method of reaching out to college coaches, you are in serious trouble. Why? Here are four excellent reasons:
- Coaches are not schooled in how to properly promote you to college coaches. Knowing what to send, when to send it and then how often to send it (again) is crucial to your success in getting a coach’s attention.
- High school and club coaches do not know enough college coaches to help you get a scholarship offer. Their interaction with college coaches has been minimal over the years and that has depended on having legitimate prospects on their previous teams.
- They do not have enough time and money to conduct a proper promotional campaign for you along with other players who may need promotional assistance. Perhaps one coach’s budget in five thousand will have a line item designated for marketing players.
- Time. Coaches work during the day and have other obligations outside their responsibilities to the team. They simply don’t have enough time to adequately give you the attention you deserve.
