Casey Wooten from South Carolina is being promoted to every college softball coach in America by NSR.

Practice hard. Play hard. Take private lessons. Join a club team. Make All-this and All-that. All these are misunderstood, though, as a high school athlete’s point of attack in recruiting. They count big, sure, but you can do all this and still miss out on realizing your dream of being recruited. Your real point of attack? Getting coaches to recognize you, to know that you exist.

So much attention is put on all the preliminary things in recruiting that what gets lost is what essentially makes the difference between playing and not playing college sports. In the day-to-day grind, in trying to get better and following a process, a high school prospect, parents and coaches lose sight that if the athlete isn’t known by college coaches, everything else is little more than exercise.

College coaches cannot recruit you if they don’t know about you. Simple, really. But, how do you do that effectively. Some think that sending a few emails and a few packages to coaches will land them a scholarship offer. Come on! Does that make sense? Not really.

Like anything else in our world, if you want to be widely recognized you have to get the word out widely, not just to a few coaches that already have athletes on their white boards that they have recognized evaluated and deemed good fits for their programs. Meanwhile, your single email, letter or package sits there unopened.

Get this, please. While that piece of paper or email is crucial in your mind, it is way down the priority list of a college coach. Their time is limited. They cannot conceivably take the time to open and read every communication they receive from mom and dad. Coaches know from experience that the odds are high that those communiqués are filled with info they can’t really use and trust.

To get on those white boards, you must follow the process which coaches use to actually identify (recognize) their recruits. First, it has to include only the info a coach needs to make an initial eval. Second, it has to be concise. And most importantly, it has to come from a reliable source.

National Scouting Report is in its 33rd year of working with college coaches at all levels. Thirty-three years!
