Birmingham, Ala — Brittany Wagner, the academic counselor in the hit Netflix original series, Last Chance U, won’t be helping students at East Mississippi Community College this fall. Instead, Wagner and her company, 10 Thousand Pencils LLC, will be working as the academic counselor for National Scouting Report.
“I am super excited to partner with NSR,” Wagner said. “To be the official counselor for this organization and all the student-athletes across the world they service is a tremendous honor for me.
“I love the value they place on academics and on truly helping these athletes with future opportunities.”
Wagner has a strong passion for helping student-athletes succeed in the classroom and life. Her passion became apparent when the Netflix original series, Last Chance U came out in 2016. In the show, she served as the academic counselor for the EMCC football team. The show follows Wagner and the EMCC football team through their attempt at winning a fourth national championship.
Rusty Rigney, President of NSR, is thrilled to bring Wagner on board his staff. He echoes Wagner’s excitement to help NSR’s athletes get more college opportunities.
“Her passion on the academic side matches our passion on the recruiting side,” Rigney said. “I’m excited to be able to give our NSR athletes access to Brittany and her experiences.
“It will be beneficial for all of our athletes, those who are struggling academically, and those who excel but are trying to get more academic scholarship money.”
As the academic counselor for NSR, Wagner will be readily available to NSR student-athletes. She will be a support system for the student-athletes. Mainly she will be answering questions they may have, or giving them tips on how to improve their test scores, time management, and study skills to name a few.
Almost all students have access to academic help in high school, but a lot of the time it’s not enough. Therefore, NSR wants to make sure the athletes they work with have everything they need to succeed.
“Most guidance counselors in high school do such a great job, but they’re overloaded,” Rigney said. “We want to make sure NSR prospects have all the information necessary to get the most opportunities possible. We want their grades to be good, their test scores and everything, so they can have a lot of options.”
Wagner will begin providing guidance to NSR kids this August. She will be conducting monthly educational videos telling athletes what they need to do at that specific time of year. So, NSR athletes are staying up-to-date and on track with their recruiting and academics. In addition, she will be available for questions and tips whenever necessary for NSR’s student-athletes.
