Academics trump athletics nearly every time with coaches

Former NSR prospect, Brooke Parrott, a four-year, two-sport starter at Pikeville University, never made an All-Conference team in high school.

Surprised?  Thought so.  It’s true.  College coaches aren’t always looking for talent at the very top level, even on high school teams.  If you are a solid athlete, playing behind a group of exceptional athletes, you may indeed be a college athlete candidate.  The major key for you?  Great heart and exceptional academics.

College coaches dearly love dependable athletes that walk in the door with great work habits, excellent character and superb grades willing to take on a support role on the team as they develop.  College teams are not always packed from top to bottom with great players because not every coach has the luxury of landing a roster full of top-notch performers.  In fact, they do normally have spots available, and some scholarship help, for student-athletes in the development phase.

Regardless of the stats you post in high school, if you can demonstrate on video a full grasp of your sport’s fundamentals and can offer a transcript which proves that you are academically sound, you can be attractive to coaches.  There is evidence to support, too, from our long history of assisting high school athletes, that many prep non-starters have gone on to become excellent college performers and contributors to their teams.

The bottom line?  These unique athletes that can take pressure off a coach’s budget by earning academic scholarships are highly sought after by many coaches.  If you can play the game and while producing at a high level in the classroom, there is probably a place for you in college athletics.
