Look at National Scouting Report basketball prospect Briana Merchant’s resume and one thing jumps out at you: She is a winner, plain and simple.
Whether it’s being an integral part her Beggs (Okla.) High School basketball team’s three consecutive conference and district titles or her 4.0-plus GPA, the 5-foot-7 senior is an exceptional young woman.
Her coach, Bunyan Johnson, said Briana has continued to grow as a player, person and student.
“Briana’s best quality is her work ethic,” Johnson said. “She is the first in the gym and the last to leave. She is very competitive whether it’s being first when running sprints or a shooting game against me. She hates to lose. She strives academically in the classroom as well and has learned to balance her time academically and athletically.”
Briana’s NSR scouting report touts her as a solid all-around player.
“Briana shows tremendous leadership on the court,” her NSR scout noted. “She runs plays from the point and communicates effectively on defense. She plays the point and small forward positions on defense and offense. She is the leading rebounder for offensive and on the defensive boards which make her a force on both ends of the floor. She is able to shoot three pointers and short jumpers. She has the ability to score out of sets and will beat her defender off of the dribble. Briana likes to attack the basket to score and is a proficient free throw shooter.”
Her junior year statistics back that up. Briana averaged about 10 points per game along with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocked shots.
Briana has had aspirations of playing college basketball for a long time.
“Playing at the collegiate level has been my life’s goal ever since I can remember,” she said. “Many years of experience has given me leadership abilities to make quick decisions and coordinate the given situation to my teams benefit. Being the leader comes with its responsibilities such as making sure my team is in place when and where they need to be. I love a challenge of winning against the odds. Being determined and always willing to except a challenge has allowed me to have no fear on the court.”
