Laura Anne Harwell

We are very proud to name Laura Anne Harwell our Female Athlete of the Day.  Attending Thompson High School near Birmingham, Laura has earned a 4.2 GPA while being ranked seventh in a class of nearly 500 of her classmates.  She intends to major in Biology.  As a junior, Laura piled up a list of honors which include leading her team to the Shelby County Tournament championship with a second place finish and winning the Hoover Toyota Open 18’s title.  Her NSR scout, Bryan Black, gives his evaluation of Laura in his scouting report when he says, ”

Laura is an intense and gifted student-athlete who works tirelessly on a daily basis to improve her skill set on the court and in the classroom.  She has all the tools necessary to be successful at the next level both on and off the court.  As a student Laura has excelled in the classroom and is ranked in the top 3% of her class and maintains a grade point average of 4.25 on a 4.00 scale.  However, her acumen is just as high on the tennis courts where she is able to analyze her opponents strengths and weaknesses and use each to her advantage during a match.  Laura’s hard nose approach continues to pay off for her each season.  She was awarded “Best Doubles Partner” both in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Most Valuable Player as a Freshman in 2010 and played in the #1 Singles position as a Sophomore in 2011. Laura will be an asset to any tennis program and will be able to contribute as soon as she steps on campus.”  Speaking to college coaches in her personal essay, Laura says, “I enjoy playing tennis and can’t wait to compete at the collegiate level.  I have been the first seed on the varsity team the past two years.  I am very competitive and driven on and off the court.  I have been able to maintain above average grades while still competing for my school and in USTA tournaments. I have been voted MVP 2 out of the 3 years I’ve been on varsity.  I helped my team win our Shelby County Tournament for the first time. I also helped lead our team to state the past two years.  I love competing as a team and doing whatever it takes to get the win.  I believe I am equally skilled at both singles and doubles and enjoy playing both.”
