When National Scouting Report prospect Michael Peters was introduced to wrestling at an early age, he could not see how it would change his life down the road.
“Wrestling has become a major part of who I am,” said Peters, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent with Maryville University outside St. Louis. “When I was about eight years old, my dad took my brother to try wrestling and I wasn’t interested. Then two years later I wanted to try it. I was in fifth grade, 10 years old, and I have been hooked ever since then.”
A quick glance at Peters’ athletic resume tells the story of a young man who is a champion — a consistent champion. The list of events he has won is too long to include here. But numerous colleges, including NCAA Division II power Maryville, took notice in the Quincy (Ill.) High School All-American.
For the second year in a row, Maryville was ranked No. 1 in the Division II preseason poll released in October by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Saints, who took third place at the 2015 NCAA Championships, start the season with nine nationally ranked wrestlers.
Peters, who expects to compete at 141 pounds in college, said wrestling has influenced other parts of his life.
“Wrestling has helped me become healthy and in better physical condition,” Peters said. “As a wrestler watching my weight, I have learned more about nutrition and proper diet to stay healthy. As an athlete, getting proper nutrition is critical in being able to maintain my weight and energy. I also exercise doing both cardio and weights to keep up endurance and strength.”
A member of the National Junior Honor Society and Beta Club, Peters carries a 3.9 GPA and plans to major in Biology or Marine Biology. A pact with his parents, Donnie and Tanya, has helped him to maintain his academic focus.
“I have been an honor roll student every year,” Peters said. “It is an agreement that I have with my parents that I have to stay on the honor roll in order to wrestle.”
NSR scout Andre Morgan enrolled Peters when he was only a freshman. Morgan’s scouting report back then was a harbinger of things to come.
“Michael’s experience on the national level is evident by his past All-American status. A college coach can be confident that he can wrestle with anyone from any part of the country. Michael is an excellent student whose transcript and class load reflects his desire to work towards being college educated. I am very confident that Michael has a bright future,” Morgan wrote.
