Get Scouted Scouting CareersPatience often pays off for high school athletes who hope to play in college.
Such was the case for Cierra “CJ” Scott from Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Okla., who waited until May to accept an offer to play college basketball for Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Missouri.
Some might say that is cutting it close, but CJ did what lots National Scouting Report prospects do: They wait for the right fit.
The recruiting process can be arduous and lengthy. That is the nature of the beast. However, there always seems to be a good school for every prospect. Some find theirs earlier than others, but as long as an athlete discovers the school that fits his or her academic, athletic and social criteria, the wait is worth every minute of stress associated with achieving their ultimate goal.
Signing CJ was a big deal for Central Christian. The school announced CJ’s decision with a dedicated story on its athletics Web page. It touted the 5-6 guard for having been instrumental in turning around a woeful program at Page as well as her consistent all-around performance on the court. From winning only two games her freshman year to a 17-9 record with back-to-back playoff appearances, CJ and the Lady Sandites did a 180-degree turn in the last four years.
A 4.3 GPA student, CJ will be making the six-hour trip northeast to Moberly in August. Although the drive is long, she said, she loved the campus and the coaches. Also, because her sister doesn’t live too far from campus, she does not think the distance will be a problem. CJ plans to major in Religious Studies with hopes of pursuing a second major in Business.
Meanwhile, CJ is working hard on her game to prepare for college competition. She says when she leaves for school she wants to have fine tuned her game and be in the best shape of her life. She even skipped her final high school softball season to get in extra basketball workouts.
“The biggest improvements I have seen is my shooting percentage,” she said. “The past three years, it hasn’t been the best, but this year I could see a huge difference especially in my threes.”
