The Road To Success

The late, Coach John Wooden (former Men’s Basketball Coach at UCLA) was not only a winner, he was one of the best at “personal development”. He knew it was “people” who would help him achieve his goals.

Whether people will admit it or not… most are starving for someone to break out of the pack and truly lead! To be a truly great leader, you have to believe in a set of values or “personal code of conduct”. Over the years, the values Coach Wooden’s father instilled in him became what is now known as the coach’s “Pyramid of Success”.

Each and every block of the pyramid is important, but what Coach Wooden decided to place at the very top was “Competitive Greatness”.

Coach Wooden’s definition of Competitive Greatness – “Perform at your best when your best is required. Your best is required each day.”

This sounds so simple, doesn’t it? It’s simple, but not easy to achieve without the right mindset. The reason it’s not easy is that every day you have to make a conscious decision whether or not you will perform at your best. If each member of the team performs at his or her best, then success will be achieved.

Unfortunately, most people want to take it easy and not be held accountable for their performance. It’s true they may give 100% effort two, three, four, or even five days a week, but not seven. That’s not 100% effort; it’s not even 80% – it’s 71%.

How do you get to 100%? Or better yet, how do you get from 70% to 80%?

It starts when you wake up each morning. Decide at that very moment, “When I lay my head down on my pillow tonight, I want to know that I’ve given everything I had TODAY!”

It’s a step-by-step, moment-by-moment, one day at a time process.

Competitive Greatness isn’t just for sports, it’s for everything we do. It should top our “Pyramid of Success”!
