The so-called sorry state of today’s youth is an overblown, inaccurate argument.
Generally, Americans have become a cynical lot. Watch the talking heads on the news, listen to talk radio, gather around the coffee pot at work, or get into a conversation with a neighbor. Finding something positive to talk about is getting harder because we focus too much on the negative.
It has to stop.
That dire view is casting an unfair shadow over today’s youth. We hear horror stories about how unmotivated our children are; how all they do is sit on sofas and play video games, seldom going outside to join in healthy activities or shying away from group participation with their peers.
In choosing to go down that pothole-filled road, adults are ignoring all the good our youngsters are doing. We are selling them short when instead we should be recognizing their work ethic, encouraging their efforts and celebrating their accomplishments on a much wider scale and taller platform.
Perhaps more than ever, today’s youngsters are excited about what lies ahead of them. They are looking toward a bright future and working hard to secure it. They are collaborating more, pushing the limits of their abilities and potential. In their eyes, the world is, indeed, their oyster.

It is time we reverse our perspective and rhetoric and begin seeing and talking about what is really happening in front of us. We cannot allow the media, which gather like buzzards around carrion, to turn our heads away from the brilliant young athletes, musicians, mathematicians, scientists, artists, naturalists and others who are changing our world for the better and whose enthusiasm is contagious if we will only follow their lead.
Look up and you will see them. At first, your view may be blurred, but open your mind to their reality, their vision. But don’t take our word for it.
Go to a high school play, concert, science or art fair, or game, meet or match. Experience the extraordinary creativity, talent and achievements of the teenagers in your community. Get off your own sofa and observe all the good things our youth are doing.
You will be astonished and your perspective will change for the better.
