It may have taken several devestating blows this past weekend, not to mention the spinal cord injury of a Rutgers University lineman, but we nevertheless appreciate the action taken by the NFL this week to encourage strict enforcement of penalties for helmet-to-helmet contact. Anyone who watches the pro game with regularity marvels that someone is not maimed or killed every week as it is. The collisions, while on one side of the coin draws fans, are obviously extremely dangerous to players on the other side. There is only so much the league can do considering the size, speed and strength of the men who play the game, but any move to raise the consciousness level of its players, especially the “head hunters” in the game, is a good thing and we support it fully.
